Borders: where do you include these in heritage organisations? What do you show or tell, consciously or subconsciously, to the public, and what not? How do you deal with thresholds and access, inside and outside? And to what degree does the public have a say in what goes on with you in front of and behind the scenes? At this Heritage Day, you can show how ground-breaking ideas and influences from abroad (UNESCO, ICOM...) gain shape with you. Or you can confront the public with questions, opportunities and problems that arise when you cross the border - literally - with your collection(s), your work, your thoughts and your influence.
In 2014 morevoer, is will also be exactly 50 years since the Moroccan and Turkish migration started up following the bilateral agreements in 1964. And... in 2014 it wil be 40 years since Islam was recognised as an official religion in Belgium. More than enough reason to go on a quest for Islamic religious and cultural heritage in Flanders and Brussels.
Without borders is a theme that has endless scope. Tourism, twinning, circus and fairground heritage, cartography, colonialism, smuggling and customs, from carrier pigeon to the internet... all these themes appear in the spotlight.
In short: a Heritage Day that knows no bounds!
