The Ommegang, a Tribute to Brussels

Ommegang Brussels
The Ommegang is a tribute to the history and folklore of Brussels. This vibrant procession has been marching through the streets of the capital for centuries, year after year.

A Colourful Tribute to History and Folklore

At the beginning of each summer, Brussels becomes even livelier than usual when a magnificent procession winds its way through the streets: the Ommegang. Every year, the centre of the capital is flooded with 1,400 performers in stunning costumes, folkloric and historical groups, horses, puppets, giants, flags, and much more. Together, they present the history of Brussels to the present day. This wonderful tradition is consistently one of the highlights of the summer season in Brussels.

Cultural World Heritage

The very first Ommegang paraded through the city as early as the 14th century. At that time, it was still a religious procession in honour of Our Lady of the Sablon. Over the centuries, its Catholic roots faded as the Ommegang took on a more social and political significance. The most famous Ommegang took place in 1549 when Emperor Charles V used the occasion to introduce his son and successor, Philip II, to the people. This scene is still recreated every year in the Ommegang to this day. In 2019, this special procession was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
