Fashion academy Antwerp
The Fashion Academy Antwerp is located in the heart of the city, on top of the ModeNatie, an impressive monumental corner building where you can also find the Flanders Fashion Institute (FFI) and the MoMu.
By the 1960’s general opinion had stopped considering the “applied arts” to be of lesser value than the “traditional arts”. In accordance with the spirit of the times, a number of new departments were added to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts: graphic design, photography, jewelry design, ceramic arts and Fashion design. In the beginning of the eighties, the fashion world and the international media started to get interested in Antwerp fashion designers, especially in the famous “Antwerp Six” who all graduated from the Academy. From then on, the fashion department of the Royal Academy shared in this international interest, not in the least because of the continuous quality of the collections designed by some of the aforementioned now famous ex-students and a new generation of designers as Veronique Branquinho, A.F. Vandevorst, Stephan Schneider, Bernhard Willhelm, Christian Wijnants, Bruno Pieters, Tim Van Steenbergen, Peter Pilotto, Les Hommes/ Bart Van Den Bossche and Tom Notte, Haider Ackermann amongst many others.
The annual graduation show
The annual graduation show of the Fashion Department, is a celebration of fashion, bringing together some 6.000 spectators from all over the world, not only to judge and/or admire the collections of the students, but also for the unique atmosphere of this grand defile. Once a year, the building is filled with friends, fashion enthusiasts, manufacturers, former students, fashion designers, styling agencies, culture buffs and the press.
