An evolving work of art on the mix of life, by conceptual artist Koen Vanmechelen in Genk. Koen Vanmechelen is the intellectual and artistic conceiver of LABIOMISTA, literally “the mix of life”. This unique collaboration between the artist and the city of Genk (region Limburg) lies in the midst of green surroundings, on the foundations of a former coalmine and public zoo. As a permanent and ever evolving open air exhibition of an impressive 60 acres, it invites people – of all sorts – to encounter, to be challenged and to be inspired by the wide-ranging practice of Koen Vanmechelen. LABIOMISTA offers visitors new perspectives on identity, fertility and biocultural diversity. Visitors will be able to walk the park using a network of pedestrian paths allowing them to engage with the nature, art and animals that play a crucial role in Vanmechelen’s work. LABIOMISTA is a place for the public to connect with the natural world and each other, while reflecting on our world.
