German military cemetery of Menenwald
In Menen you can find the largest German military cemetery in Belgium. About 48,000 soldiers are buried here. During World War I, Menen was in German hands. The army laid out a cemetery near a forest, hence the name ‘Menen Wald’.In the 1950s, the 128 German military cemeteries in Belgium were merged into four large resting places. About 40,000 fallen soldiers were moved to Menenwald, which makes it the largest cemetery in West Flanders and the largest German WWI cemetery on the continent.
