A tourist programme around Charles V, that emperor who was the forerunner to European unity... even if he often fought with his neighbouring "colleagues": Francis I of France and Henry VIII of England. That era when Europe was moving from the Middle Ages towards the modern age is full of lessons which help us to understand the European Union of today. He spent most of his reign (1515-1555) in Brussels where he had installed his court, and the underground passages beneath place Royale are still evidence of the pomp and ceremony with which he surrounded himself.
