The American dancer and choreographer William Forsythe, contributing artist and co-curator, draxs inspiration for this exhibition both from Rubens' creativity as a scenery designer and from the natural environment of the Middelheim Museum sculpture park. The Middelheim Museum is high lighting the contemporary legacy of the Baroque, by emphasizing the tension between the natural and the artificial. The grotto, the maze, the tableau vivant, the folly, the fountain, the trompe l'oeil - each of these baroque motifs inspires international contemporary artists to create new works, at the crossroads between architecture, sculpture and installation, specifically for the Middelheim Museum and public spaces in the city, that will beguile, surprise, impress the public.
