The Flemish Calixte Veulemans opened the doors of Aux Armes de Bruxelles in 1921. The young entrepreneur quickly created a top restaurant and thanks to a special delivery deal he could offer his clients fresh mussels on a daily base. Veulemans was the first to introduce the casserole, the way nowadays mussels are traditionally served. The interior of Aux Armes de Bruxelles is typical for historical Brussels restaurants. It is decorated with oak skirting and antique stained glass windows. In the main room waiters swift between the tables in crisp white aprons and serve their clients with old school respect. On the menu is all the typical comforting Belgian food like "vol-au-vent", "tomate crevette", and stew casserole of veal. As of a couple years the Veulemans family retired and Aux Armes de Bruxelles is now run by the de Groupe Flo. These guys run about 22 brasseries, such as the Boffinger in Paris. But even without a Veulemans in the house, Aux Armes de Bruxelles stays a top fine dining address in the historical center loved by the Brussels locals and even once loved by the Brussels singer Jacques Brel. We recommend to carefully taste the mayonnaise, in which the Belgians like to drown their fries.
