Everyone should be able to enjoy Flanders in comfort and without worries, which is why VISITFLANDERS awards accessibility labels to accommodation providers that are genuinely committed to accessibility. An A or A+ label immediately lets you know what to expect, and you can plan your stay to suit your needs.

The different accessibility labels, and what they mean.

VISITFLANDERS awards two accessibility labels: A and A+ These labels help you quickly see how accessible an accommodation is, and whether it meets your needs.

Label A: this accommodation has limited accessible facilities, but is suitable for most people with disabilities. In some cases, a little extra effort or help may be needed.

How is the accessibility label awarded, and by whom?

The accessibility of accommodation is assessed by specialists atInter, the Flemish Centre of Expertise on Accessibility. They carry out a thorough on-site analysis, and assess how accessible and comfortable the location is for people with disabilities. They carry out a thorough on-site analysis, and assess how accessible and comfortable the location is for people with disabilities.

The following aspects, amongst others, are analysed:

  • parking and access path
  • the entrance and reception area
  • dining and breakfast room
  • sleeping areas
  • sanitary equipment
  • multi-purpose spaces
  • doors, walkways, and differences in level

Each component is given a score. Based on these scores, an independent committee decides which label to award. The committee is comprised of accessibility specialists, representatives from the sector, and organisations representing people with disabilities.

A label is important for giving a first impression, but it never tells the whole story. If you still unsure, or need more information, please feel free to contact the holiday accommodation. You can then check whether the facilities on offer and accessibility meet your personal needs.
