Selfie spots in Flanders; unique in the world and accessible to everyone

Selfies are the most popular travel souvenir. A moment to share, keep and relive. But how do you take a selfie if you can’t see where you’re standing? Selfie for All makes the fun of successful selfies accessible to everyone. Be sure to give it a try on your next trip to Flanders.

What is Selfie for All?

Under the name ‘Selfie for All’, tactile tiles at various locations in Flanders show you where to stand and which direction to turn the camera in order to take a successful selfie. If you're a blind or visually impaired visitor, it helps you take a snapshot independently at some of the most amazing spots in Flanders. But Selfie for All is of course designed for everyone; whether you’re a passer-by or an enthusiastic traveller, you can use it free of charge! Did you know Selfie for All is a world first? Nowhere else in the world can everyone – with or without a disability – take their own selfie at iconic tourist locations and hidden gems.

The selfie tile features a NaviLens code on the ground. From a few metres away, point your smartphone at the ground to locate the code. Does the app indicate that you are about 1 metre away? You may already be in the right spot, as the distance from your smartphone to the ground is also included. Stand on the footprints. Your position feels like a capital T: a horizontal line in front of your feet, with a vertical line between them. The point of interest is now behind you.

How does it work?

  1. Go to the tile of your choice. You can find all the tiles on the map at the bottom of this page or use Google Maps.
  2. Are you near the tile? If you’re blind or visually impaired, you can find the exact spot using NaviLens. The FAQ section at the bottom of this page explains how to use NaviLens.
  3. The tile has two raised footprints on it (it can feel like a capital T: a horizontal line in front of your feet and a vertical line between your feet). Stand on the two footprints. The landmark will then be perfectly positioned behind you in the shot.
  4. Face the camera and try to place yourself in the centre of the frame. If you can still see well enough, you can check this on your screen. If you use speech technology, your phone can help you with this.
  5. Everyone ready? Say “cheese” ... and click
  6. Want to know more about the place where you took this great selfie? NaviLens GO can help. The FAQ section at the bottom of this page explains how to use this app. Be prepared for your journey. You’ll often need your smartphone along the way, so bring a power bank to make sure you always have enough battery.

Tip! Try taking a selfie at home first, before you go to the location. Then you'll know what works best for you and you can take your selfie quickly once you’re there. We’ve also listed some extra tips to help you take a stand-out selfie.
