The most beautiful square in the world

The Grand-Place in Brussels may very well be the most beautiful square in the world. You can discover centuries of history and fascinating architecture here, especially in the stately  town hall.

The facade of this Gothic masterpiece is adorned with countless sculptures. The Archangel Michael, protector of the city, adorns the top of its tower. The interior is equally impressive. Reception halls and aldermen’s chambers display exquisite tapestries, Gothic woodwork, coats of arms from the old guilds, and paintings from the city museum’s collection.

You can also find Brussels City Museum just across the square in the King's House. Here, you can explore the tumultuous history of the capital of Belgium through a diverse collection of paintings, tapestries, scale models, archaeological finds, and endless stories.

Also on the Grand-Place: A Lasting Tribute to Everard t’Serclaes. This statue of the rebellious Brussels native marks the spot where he died. According to legend, the statue brings good luck, and those who rub it may make a wish and are certain to return to Brussels one day.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Grand-Place has been the heart of Brussels since the 12th century In 1998, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Gothic town hall is its most striking landmark. Construction of this architectural giant began as early as 1401. Nearly three centuries later, its story nearly ended when troops under Louis XIV set it ablaze. Fortunately, the walls and tower survived. To this day, you can still admire its grandeur at the very heart of Europe.

The King's House also plays a major role in Brussels’ historical chronicles. In the late 16th century, the Count of Egmont and his companion, the Count of Horn, spent their final night here. The next day, they were executed on the Grand-Place for rebelling against Spanish King Philip II.
