From private estate to city park

The story of Rivierenhof stretches back centuries. In the 16th century, the site began as a private estate and later became home to the Jesuit order, a legacy commemorated by a 1735 plaque. After the order was dissolved in 1773, banker Jan Baptist Cogels acquired the estate and neighbouring Sterckshof, commissioning the renowned architect Charles de Wailly (court architect to King Louis XVI of France) to redesign the park. He added formal gardens, tree-lined avenues, new canals, and a reflective pond. In the early 1920s, Rivierenhof became property of the Province of Antwerp. It was transformed into the city’s largest public park and opened to everyone.
