In the charming polder village of Bazel, a sturdy moated castle rises proudly above the Scheldt Valley. This remarkable site dates back to the 13th century. For more than 200 years, Wissekerke Castle was home to the influential Vilain XIIII family. Today, you can experience its fascinating past through an interactive trail filled with stories, projections, and atmospheric soundscapes.

A lavish residence for the viscount

The story of Wissekerke begins in the 13th century, when a formidable moated castle guarded the banks of the River Scheldt to defend the region. Although time has long since claimed the original structure, Wissekerke has remained a place of prestige. Over the centuries, the estate was regularly altered and even rebuilt. The most fascinating period in the castle’s history began when the noble Vilain XIIII family took up residence. This powerful dynasty lived here for over two centuries, shaping the castle into the form we admire today.

Grand renovations and a modern innovation

In the 19th century, Viscount Philippe and his wife Zoé de Feltz transformed the castle in a richly detailed neo-Gothic style. The imposing façade and matching entrance gate date from this period. An English landscape park was laid out around the castle, complete with an elegant suspension bridge and a kitchen garden growing exotic fruits. Beneath the dovecote, an ice cellar was installed – a cutting-edge innovation at the time. The viscountess drew inspiration from the Empire style for the interior, which was highly fashionable during the era of her close friend Napoleon.
