Pieter Bruegel el Viejo (c. 1525-30 – 1569) sigue siendo un misterio en muchos sentidos. Su obra rica, incluso compleja, continúa asombrando. Bruegel fue un brillante paisajista, un brillante cronista de la vida de la época y poseía un gran sentido del humor.

El antepasado de la familia de artistas Bruegel - sus hijos Pieter y Jan también fueron artistas distinguidos - nació en 1525. O tal vez en 1530, o en algún punto intermedio. Todavía hay diferentes teorías sobre su lugar de nacimiento. Por lo tanto, todavía hay muchos misterios sobre la vida de este maestro flamenco. Aunque eso no es realmente lo que cuenta. La impresionante obra de este pintor, dibujante, grabador y diseñador de grabados es lo que cuenta. Y eso dice mucho.

Están los majestuosos paisajes de Bruegel. La representación típicamente bruegeliana de la vida popular de la época. Las asombrosas escenas en las que se incorporan criaturas imaginativas. El humor y la ironía que solía utilizar para retratar las debilidades humanas universales. Las impresiones inventivas, complejas y arremolinadas sobre papel. Bruegel construyó esa amplia obra en un tiempo bastante corto. Murió alrededor de su cuadragésimo cumpleaños. De su obra se conservan cuarenta cuadros.

Este maestro flamenco acabó su vida en Bruselas. Aunque sus obras maestras están repartidas por todo el mundo, su esencia se mantiene aquí en casa. Los Museos Reales de Bellas Artes de Bélgica (KMSKB) poseen cuatro de sus obras maestras. En la colección de la Biblioteca Real de Bélgica (KBR) encontrará alrededor de noventa grabados únicos y tres dibujos.Al mismo tiempo, también está relacionado con Amberes, la ciudad donde se convirtió en artista. Su obra maestra La Loca Meg y la serie Doce Proverbios todavía se puede admirar en el Museo Mayer Van den Bergh.

La mirada de Bruegel se puede encontrar en todos los rincones del mundo, pero en ninguna tan aguda como aquí.
