Flanders and foodies: a match made in culinary heaven

In the midst of culinary giants, we, the small but proud region of Flanders, have charted our own course. Our uniqueness lies in doing things our way. Always. We’re passionate about dishes made with local products. So get your batch of freshly caught grey shrimp from the North Sea, taste the uniqueness of our white asparagus, and find out why our Belgian endive is called white gold.

“Flanders and its culinary heroes treat you to experiences you simply can’t find anywhere else. Come on over and taste the magic for yourself.”

GOESTING for authenticity and quality

In Flanders we believe that good food is the key to the heart. No matter what we cook up, you can trust it's top-notch quality. From our beloved ‘frietkoten’ to elegant Michelin-starred restaurants: nowhere else will you find so much diversity in such a small area.

Here’s a tasty selection of places that will give you GOESTING:

  • Frietkot (fries stand) – for the best fries in the world and a delicious quick bite (so much better than fast food)
  • Tearoom – enjoy a hot cup of coffee with a “speculaas” biscuit and a Brussels waffle (we excel in afternoon treats)
  • Café – discover amazing Belgian beers and mouthwatering snacks like Flemish beef stew and shrimp croquettes
  • Brasserie –  our quintessential Flemish classics (prepared grandmother's way)
  • Restaurant – for the full dining experience, with a twist on classic cuisine, but with seasonal dishes and local products
Michelin-starred restaurant – there are plenty of Michelin stars to be found in our tiny little Flanders (we rank 4th  globally)

Feeling adventurous? Discover the essence of Flanders through our UNESCO-worthy traditions. From our iconic fry and beer culture to shrimp fishing on horseback: these are living stories of Flanders' unique charm and flavors. But don’t just take our word for it. Let your taste buds do the talking.

Tips to enjoy Flanders like a local

The perfect order at the ‘frietkot’

Choose your favorite snack(s) – we recommend Bicky Burgers and ‘curryworsten’. Select from over 20 sauces, whether you prefer your sauce on top of your fries (grab a little wooden fork to keep your fingers clean) or on the side.

This is how and when we enjoy our food

We tackle lunch between 12 and 2 pm, then dive into dinner mode from 6 to 9 pm. Our motto: the earlier we start, the more time we can spend eating!

Tip: for an authentic Flemish experience, look for ‘op grootmoeders wijze’ (prepared grandmother's way) on the menu or discover must-try dishes labeled 'van het huis' and 'van de chef'.

Belgian beer culture and the importance of using the right glass

In Flanders, brewers care about how their beers are served. That’s why every beer has its own unique, branded glass. Whether it's a chalice with a large bowl on a solid stem for Trappist beers or tulip-shaped ones for strong blonde beers, the glass matters. Always.
