Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) è uno dei più grandi pittori della storia dell’arte europea. Il padre del Barocco è famoso come genio del pennello, ma anche come architetto, poliglotta, diplomatico, collezionista d’arte, nonché eminente cittadino di Anversa.

Rubens aveva una genialità poliedrica. Da un lato figura di spicco del Barocco: le tele di enormi dimensioni, la potente gestualità, l’ineguagliabile pathos. Gran parte della sua opera appare ancora oggi, per così dire, esagerata. Di contro, era in grado di lavorare con grande raffinatezza e in minuziosi dettagli. Il tutto per dare vita a una strabiliante opera omnia: dipinti, disegni, illustrazioni e persino arazzi. Il maestro ha lasciato circa 2.500 composizioni e 10.000 opere d’arte.

Molte di quelle opere sono finite nel corso dei secoli nei principali musei di tutto il mondo. Eppure è qui, nella sua Anversa, che è possibile conoscere al meglio il maestro.

Dopo un periodo di formazione in Italia, tornò nella sua città natale e acquistò una casa che trasformò nel suo palazzo personale. Fu lo stesso artista-architetto a redigere il progetto, ispirandosi al Rinascimento italiano. Il risultato fu uno stupendo palazzo, comprensivo di atelier, padiglione da giardino e museo di sculture.

È lì infatti che avrebbe trascorso metà della sua vita, anche professionale. Ed è lì che avrebbero visto la luce numerosi suoi capolavori. Ancora oggi il palazzo rende omaggio al suo padre spirituale. Oggi è un museo: la Rubenshuis, luogo speciale attualmente in fase di ristrutturazione. Ma non c'è da preoccuparsi. Rubens ti accoglierà sempre con piacere nella sua biblioteca, nel giardino e nella Rubens Experience. Dove puoi avvicinarti di più alla vita e all’opera di Rubens, se non qui? 

Anche il resto della città mostra orgoglioso tracce del maestro. Nella Cattedrale di Nostra Signora sono visibili quattro monumentali dipinti realizzati da lui. Nella chiesa di San Giacomo, dove sono sepolti Rubens e la sua famiglia, sopra l’altare troneggia una sua opera. E anche il Museo Reale delle Belle Arti di Anversa (KMSKA) possiede un’impressionante collezione di suoi capolavori. Le sale Rubens rappresentano il cuore pulsante del rinnovato KMSKA.
