La Casa di Ensor

Per conoscere davvero il grande James Ensor non si può rinunciare a una visita ci Ostenda. La regina delle città costiere è indissolubilmente legata al grande precursore delle arti moderne. Ed è lì che sorge, ad esempio, la Casa di Ensor, il luogo in cui l’artista visse e lavorò negli ultimi 30 anni della sua vita. Molti dei suoi capolavori videro qui la luce. Oggigiorno la casa è un museo, di recente restaurato e riportato al suo pieno splendore. Con una collezione permanente e mostre temporanee interattive è possibile immergersi nella vita talvolta tumultuosa e nella prestigiosa opera del grande maestro. Il luogo ideale per avvicinarsi a Ensor.

Mu.ZEE

Naturalmente, anche il Mu.ZEE di Ostenda rende omaggio a Ensor. Il museo possiede un’impressionante collezione di arte moderna e contemporanea, composta da 28 dipinti, fra cui l’iconico Autoritratto con cappello fiorito, numerosi disegni, acqueforti e litografie di Ensor. Un’opulenza esposta nell’ala del museo riservata a Ensor e Spilliaert, dedicata al maestro e al suo concittadino, nonché collega artista, Léon Spilliaert.

Musei Reali delle Belle Arti di Bruxelles (KMSKB)

Ensor è riportato nei libri di storia come originario di Ostenda, ma non va trascurato lo stretto legame con Bruxelles. All’età di 17 anni si trasferì infatti nella capitale per completare la sua formazione artistica. In seguito, partecipò al gruppo di artisti votati all’innovazione riunitosi sotto il nome di Les Vingt. Lo spirito di Ensor non è mai sparito del tutto dalla capitale. I Musei Reali delle Belle Arti di Bruxelles(KMSKB) espongono diverse sue opere. Ma anche musei privati minori, come il Van Buuren e il Museum van Elsene vantano opere di Ensor.

Museo Reale delle Belle Arti di Anversa (KMSKA)

Gli appassionati di Ensor che si spostano da Ostenda a Bruxelles non possono rinunciare a una sosta ad Anversa. Nel Museo Reale delle Belle Arti di Anversa(KMSKA) si trova infatti la più grande collezione di Ensor al mondo, un vero e proprio scrigno di capolavori d’arte. Oltre a un tesoro di disegni e schizzi, il KMSKA possiede ben 38 dipinti, fra cui indiscussi capolavori quali L’intrigo e Lo scheletro pittore. Una simile opulenza artistica viene ora ulteriormente esaltata nella sala a tema dedicata a Ensor, risultato dei radicali lavori di restauro del museo.

Museum Plantin-Moretus, Anversa

Non molto lontano in città si trova il Museum Plantin-Moretus, un tempo dimora di un’eminente famiglia di tipografi, oggi museo. Accanto a una serie di dipinti di Rubens, vi si trova anche un interessante Gabinetto delle stampe che contiene ben 188 stampe e 13 disegni realizzati da Ensor. Al fine di preservarli, sono esposti a rotazione. Possono essere tuttavia ammirati tutti in formato digitale nell’archivio del Gabinetto delle stampe. Quando invece vengono esposti, godono di ottima compagnia, affiancati da disegni, tra gli altri, di Bruegel e dell’artista contemporaneo Luc Tuymans.

Museum Plantin-Moretus è attualmente chiuso per lavori di ristrutturazione e riaprirà le porte sabato 5 dicembre.

Museo delle Belle Arti, Gent

Tra la città natale di Ensor, Ostenda, e le metropoli Bruxelles e Anversa si erge Gent, altra città d’arte che comprende un po’ di Ensor nella sua offerta. Il Museo delle Belle Arti(MSK) possiede cinque suoi dipinti, uno dei quali è la Vecchia signora con maschere. La tela viene considerata uno degli apici artistici del cosiddetto periodo fantastico di Ensor, in cui le maschere carnevalesche risalenti alla sua infanzia rivendicano prepotentemente un ruolo di spicco.

Spaziosa galleria d’arte con soffitti alti e grandi dipinti incorniciati. I visitatori sono sparsi, alcuni osservano da vicino le opere. Atmosfera calma e silenziosa.

Gran parte dell’impressionante opera di Ensor è stata acquistata dai principali musei di ogni parte del mondo. Eppure è qui, nei ricchi musei fiamminghi, che puoi conoscere al meglio l’opera di questa vera e propria icona. Un viaggio nella vita di Ensor, un viaggio nelle Fiandre.
