James Ensor (1860-1949) is een sleutelfiguur in de moderne kunstgeschiedenis. Hij staat te boek als een pionier van verschillende kunststromingen. Deze Oostendenaar pur sang liet zich niet zomaar in een hokje stoppen.

Ensor was een uitstekende beoefenaar van het impressionisme, was een geweldige colorist, maakte kunst vol humor en satire en bezat een grote voorliefde voor het groteske. Hij hield van experiment, maar is tegelijk een erg herkenbare kunstenaar. Ensor ontwikkelde een internationale uitstraling met zijn geheel eigen stijl en thematiek. Getuige daarvan de karakteristieke elementen die vaak terugkeren in zijn schilderijen.

Carnavalsmaskers zijn een eerste belangrijke bouwsteen. De kiemen daarvoor werden gelegd in zijn kindertijd. Ensor groeide op in de souvenirwinkel van zijn ouders in Oostende, waar ook maskers werden verkocht. Die kregen later een belangrijke plek in zijn oeuvre. In verschillende van zijn doeken duiken gemaskerde personages op.

Ook de figuur van de dood is een constante in zijn schilderwerk, net als zijn sluimerende afkeer van de bourgeoisie en gevestigde waarden, hoewel hij later zelf tot baron werd benoemd.

Een bebaarde man in pak, met een bloemenhoed, kijkt aandachtig. De achtergrond is een kunstzinnige mix van aardetinten, wat een beschouwende sfeer oproept.

Oostende speelt een belangrijke rol in de wereld van Ensor. De vele kleurschakeringen van de zee daagden hem gedurende zijn hele carrière uit. Ook de stad zelf is onlosmakelijk met hem verbonden. Hij werd er geboren en woonde er quasi heel zijn leven. Uiteindelijk blies hij er ook zijn laatste adem uit, na een carrière van 70 jaar waarin hij de wereld zo’n 850 schilderijen schonk.

En de grootmeester is vandaag nog steeds thuis in de Koningin der Badsteden. De plek waar hij de laatste 30 jaar van zijn leven verbleef, is nu omgedoopt tot Ensorhuis, een unieke brok erfgoed met een prachtig bezoekerscentrum. Ook het nabijgelegen Mu.ZEE werpt een blik op zijn leven en werk.

Heel wat van dat rijke oeuvre vond zijn weg naar de grootste musea ter wereld. Al biedt Vlaanderen de best mogelijke kennismaking met deze grootheid. Het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen (KMSKA) bezit ‘s werelds grootste Ensor-collectie, terwijl ook de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel (KMSKB) een aardig stuk van zijn oeuvre tonen. De musea Plantin-Moretus (Museum Plantin-Moretus is momenteel gesloten voor renovatiewerken en heropent de deuren op zaterdag 5 december) en Dhondt-Dhaenens en het Museum voor Schone Kunsten (MSK) in Gent verspreiden evenzeer zijn goede boodschap.

Ensor in Vlaanderen

Ensor is thuis in Oostende, ook vandaag nog. Duik in het leven van de moderne Meester aan de Noordzee en ontdek zijn nalatenschap in Vlaanderens kunstpaleizen. Van Oostende tot Antwerpen, van Brussel tot Gent. Ensor overweldigt altijd en overal.
